Matteo Cascinari is Business Unit Manager for On-line services of the "Il Sole 24 Ore", Italian leader finance and economy news daily. Matteo is not a blogger and I have had the pleasure to meet him at the recent Web and Media conference organized by the Top-IX consortium.

Matteo sees blogs from the point of view of media business and from his extended experience with media innovation across news print and satellite tv broadcasting.

Here is what he had to say about what blogs really are (translated in English - original interview in Italian):

"Blogs are new expression modalities...

I’ve already been too technical...

It is a way for people to express themselves and say what they want.

It’s a very emerging and extraordinarily interesting phenomenon, in many ways explosive, and definitely to follow closely.

...

It’s a diary where one says what he wants and allows others to answer, create a relationship, to create new worlds for communication, friendship and also where to create new business opportunities.

It’s extremely pliable and flexible at this time. It can be used, well, the technique is that of a diary, where one can simply write about having gone to McDonald’s, or write about something more professional, of an investigative nature, or journalistic, or any other activity that could be considered more professional, but is useful in all of these.

They can definitely be considered alternative news sources; whether they will be competitive we will surely have to wait a while to say if it is so.

Positively, we have to pose ourselves the question of whether they indeed are competitive news sources, because they are more free, have less obstacles and less costs, ...so they can indeed be very competitive."
