What is a blog? Jenny Toomey video clip
Monday, February 20, 2006Jenny Toomey is the Executive Director of the Future of Music Coalition. I have had the pleasure of meeting Jenny two weeks ago during the Digital Content Creation, Distribution and Access conference that took place here in Rome with the presence of many prestigious international guests.
Jenny connects the dots between blogs and the music industry and brings some valuable insight on how blogs and independent music artists can leverage these new communication tools for their own benefit.
Here is a full text transcript of her contribution:
"A blog is an online journal. It can be something as casual as someone writing down what shoes they’re wearing every single day to something as complicated as people publishing complicated philosophical essays.
The best musical blogs that I see right now are being run by fans and they’re parallel to the fanzines. I don’t know if you have a fanzine culture here…
But fanzines are people who are music fans and write these hand-made magazines about music they loved.
Now they can do it online, they can do it immediately and they can click into mp3s of music.
So they can share that charismatic love of music. If they come back from a show, and it’s the best show they ever saw… talk about why it was the best show they ever saw, and click a link to the band’s music so that other people can become fans immediately.
I think there is nothing more compelling in getting people to care about music they’ve never heard before than blogs.
Well, I think the unique feature is that you can put film, you can put music and you can put images up immediately.
And people can link to them and share them…
